Go on a Journey Through Time: Discover the Whalan Depot
July 30, 2024
Nestled in the heart of the Root River Valley, the quaint town of Whalan, Minnesota, holds a treasure trove of history and charm. With a population of just 67, Whalan is a small yet vibrant community, perfectly embodying the spirit of Bluff Country. One of the most beloved landmarks in this tiny town is the Whalan Depot, a testament to both the rich past and the lively present of this picturesque area.
The Whalan Depot, an original 1870s rail line depot, stands as a silent witness to the many changes that have shaped the town.
In its early days, the depot was a bustling hub of activity. Trains would arrive with passengers eager to explore the burgeoning town or transport goods that fueled local tobacco farms and other businesses. The depot's walls echo with the stories of long-ago travelers whose initials and messages can still be seen etched into the window panes, (and until it was renovated, they were filled with old wine bottles from the overnight clerk)—a tangible connection to the past. After the rail line was decommissioned, the depot was used as a simple residence and wood shop for many years by a local artisan woodworker.
Whalan was a thriving community in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
It boasted grocery stores, large tobacco farms, a post office, a bank, and even a mink farm. The railroad was a vital artery, bringing life and commerce to the town. The depot was at the center of it all, a place where people met, goods were exchanged, and news was shared.
Fast forward to today, and the Whalan Depot has been lovingly restored and repurposed.
Owner Kim Berekvam has done a wonderful job maintaining the Depot's historic charm while serving a new generation of visitors. Since May 2021, the depot has operated as a delightful gift shop and snack stop, catering to the many cyclists, hikers, and tourists traveling along the Root River State Trail.
The depot's transformation into a modern-day rest stop was carefully done to preserve its historical integrity.
Visitors can still see the old window etchings and feel the palpable sense of history as they step inside. The interior is adorned with rustic décor that nods to its past, while shelves are stocked with an array of modern treats and treasures. Be sure to ask to see the log books which date back over 100 years!
Located, basically right on the trail, the Whalan Depot has become a favorite stop for trail travelers.
Here, weary bikers can find a variety of refreshments to recharge their energy. Ice cream treats, cold drinks, candy, and snacks-on-the-go are among the popular offerings. One of the big sellers is the fresh fudge from Valley Fudge and Candy in Coon Valley, Wisconsin—a sweet indulgence after a long ride. In addition to snacks, the depot features a selection of artisan gifts and crafts, perfect for those looking to take a piece of Whalan home with them. Bike accessories are also available, ensuring that cyclists are well-equipped for their journey along the scenic Root River State Trail.
While Whalan may be small, it is filled with wonderful discoveries that surprise and charm visitors.
The town’s scenic beauty, framed by the Root River and surrounding limestone bluffs, provides a perfect backdrop for relaxation and adventure, and offers much to explore. Great gift shops, lodging options, outdoor recreation, and more round out a great experience in this gem of a town.
The Whalan Depot, with its dual role as a historic landmark and a modern-day amenity, captures the essence of Whalan.
It is a place where time pauses, allowing visitors to step back into history while enjoying the simple pleasures of today. Whether you're cycling the trail, indulging in local treats, or simply soaking in the serene surroundings, the Whalan Depot invites you to slow down, savor the moment, and experience the unique charm of this hidden gem in Bluff Country.
