The origins of the Stone Mill Hotel & Suites trace back to the Phoenix Hotel, a prominent establishment constructed in 1869 during the early days of Lanesboro's founding.

This historic hotel served as a cornerstone of the community, catering to travelers and locals alike. Tragically, the Phoenix Hotel was destroyed by fire in May 1885, leaving a void in the heart of Lanesboro.

From the ashes of the Phoenix Hotel emerged the building that would become the Stone Mill Hotel & Suites. Erected in 1885 by Peter A. and Samuel A. Nelson, the structure initially operated as Nelson Brothers' Cold Storage. It stored ice harvested from local ponds and processed eggs and poultry, which were shipped across the Midwest. The building's construction included salvaged limestone from the Phoenix Hotel and quarried stone from nearby bluffs, showcasing the community's resilience and resourcefulness.

Over the decades, the building changed hands several times. In the 1930s, it was owned by Mr. Wilson, who continued its use for egg and poultry processing. In the 1950s, the Hager Family acquired the property and expanded operations, incorporating adjacent buildings such as the Feed Mill.

Transition to Stone Mill Hotel & Suites

In 1999, the Lamon Family, led by Rick and Cheryl Lamon, purchased the historic stone building and the Feed Mill. Rick, who had served as the Superintendent of Lanesboro Schools from 1980 to 2005, saw an opportunity to preserve Lanesboro's history while contributing to its tourism industry. The renovation of the stone building began shortly after their purchase, and on July 13, 2001, the Stone Mill Hotel & Suites opened its doors to the public.

The Lamons were meticulous in maintaining the building's historical integrity while incorporating modern comforts and amenities. Each room and suite is uniquely themed, reflecting Lanesboro's rich heritage. The adjacent Feed Mill building underwent renovations and now provides additional lodging, ensuring that the charm and history of the Stone Mill Hotel & Suites extend throughout the property.

The Lamons' Legacy and Community Impact

Rick Lamon's tenure as the superintendent underscored his commitment to education and community. During his leadership, a new school building was constructed, and an on-site daycare facility was established—a first for Minnesota schools. Cheryl Lamon, an accomplished fiber artist, ran a successful quilting business in Lanesboro, contributing to the town's artistic community.

Upon retiring from education in 2005, the Lamons transitioned into innkeeping and continued to impact the community through the Stone Mill Hotel & Suites. The inn has become a cornerstone of Lanesboro's tourism industry, offering not only comfortable lodging but also a glimpse into the town's past and a celebration of its vibrant present.

In December, Cheryl "retired" from her retail location but continues to create art and quilts. Her artistic talents are evident in the design and decor of the inn, where guests can see her work firsthand. The Lamons' dedication to preserving historical buildings and promoting tourism has contributed greatly to the town's economy and cultural identity.

Stone Mill Hotel & Suites is more than just an inn; it's a testament to the resilience and ingenuity of the community.

From its origins in the ashes of the Phoenix Hotel to its transformation into a beloved lodging destination, the building's history adds to its cultural significance. The Lamons' stewardship of the Stone Mill Hotel & Suites and their contributions to the community highlight their commitment to preserving Lanesboro's heritage and fostering its continued growth.

Visitors to the Stone Mill Hotel & Suites not only enjoy a comfortable stay year-round, but also immerse themselves in the history and charm of Lanesboro. As the Lamons continue to oversee the inn's operations and support local initiatives, their legacy as community leaders and champions of Lanesboro's unique character is assured for generations to come.
